Designer label

The term designer label refers to clothing and other personal accessory items sold under an often prestigious marquee which is commonly named after a designer. The term is most often only applied to luxury items. Examples includes labels such as Kenneth Cole, Gucci, Arkadius, Armani, Calvin Klein, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Valentino, Chanel, Miu Miu, Just Cavalli and others. which are derived from the company's founder and most iconic designer. Other clothing (and accessories) marquee names do not directly refer to the company's founder:

Example are , Dooney & Bourke, United Colors of Benetton, and L. L. Bean may be referred to as designer labels. While members of the upper middle class, or the mass affluent, are perhaps the most commonly targeted customers of these designer labels, some marquees—such as Cartier—tend to a wealthier customer base. While a relationship between consumer products and social class may exist to some extent, it should be noted that any notion connecting consumer products to class status is of highly subjective and vague nature.

One interesting trend concerning designer label garments is that although in the past they have been regarded as elitist and generally the province of the rich and wealthy, the deep recession that started to bite in the United States in 2008 saw thousands of women's designer label fashion items making their way into recycle stores online. Labels like Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen and Chanel were now affordable to the general population.

Some labels that have sold in leading retail stores for thousands of dollars could now be bought for hundreds of dollars. Is this a trend pointing to the diminishing value in designer label names or is this a one-off phenomenon attributable to the global financial crisis. Many accessory designers start from home, that's the beauty of this business. A kitchen countertop would be sufficient, if you don't have an extra room. You can still live your life without interrupted by this new venture, that's why becoming an accessory designer is one of many homemakers' dreams.
